Cabo Los Segunda Vida
Cabo Los Segunda Vida…the “Cape of the Second Life” is a pool that takes advantage of all of latest in pool automation, pump and lighting technology. It also is a pool employs the finest in finishes and leaves nothing to the imagination.
The pool is not particularly large but it is efficient in is use of the space. Surrounded by live oaks and water oaks and native grasses this pool is a negative edge pool that does not get in the way of the surrounding beauty. From inside the owners new home one can take in the pool as it frames the scenery. The owners enjoy seeing the forest beyond the pool and all of the many varieties of birds that soar and play.
The pool is a simple rectangle shape measuring 16’ x 34’ with a raised spa on one end. The spa and pool are all finished with imported 1” x 1” glass tiles in a multitude of shades of blue. The spa incorporates a negative edge on all four sides and has the appearance of a slowly melting cube of glacial ice sitting on the deck. The spa has a trough on two sides and parts of the other two sides that return to the water overflowing to the pool.
The same glass tile is used for the pool waterline as well as the exterior negative edge wall presenting a stunning shining appearance.
The pool features Wet Edge Technologies® Prism Matrix™ in Indigo Blue. Prism Matrix is a pebble finish which incorporates tiny polished glass beads and abalone shell. The glass beads pick up the colors of the glass tile used on the pool and spa and the abalone shell reflects the sun’s ray resulting in a breath-taking sparkle. The spa was finished with a Primera Stone™ plaster finish using the “Blue Pacific Coast” color. Primera Stone™ is then polished with diamond grinders resulting in a perfectly smooth comfortable finish. The negative edge catch basin is finished in Luna Quartz® exposed aggregate finish in the “Pacific” color. The result is that the pool picks up the brilliant blue of the central Texas sky and the multi-hued glass tiles.
The equipment package on this pool and spa is exclusively Pentair®. The control system in the IntelliTouch™ expandable system and incorporates the smart-phone and computer based ScreenLogic™ controls allowing for multiple pathways to pool automation. The main pool filter pump is the IntelliFlo VS+SVRS™ variable speed pump. The pool is furnished with a swim-jet exercise system that employs three IntelliFlo XF™ variable-speed, high flow water feature pumps. When the spa engaged valve actuators move automatically to use two of those pumps to power two banks of spa jets. Combined with the main filter pump, which is valved to do double duty as well a total of eighteen jets powered by three separate variable speed pumps and three 2 h.p. air blowers provides a highly therapeutic experience. Finally the spa has a “deep therapy well” which allows the owners to stand in chest deep water and receive a full-body massage.
One of the three resistant swim jets is also valved to provide a boost to the water flow going over the negative edge weir of the pool resulting in a soothing water fall backdrop to the relaxation occurring waterside.
After dark the experience takes on a whole new personality. There are a total of eleven LED lights that come into play. The pool utilizes two IntelliBrite 5G™ LED spa lights mounted in the floor of the negative edge basin shining into the sky above and bathing the tiled wall in a variety of colors. One more IntelliBrite 5G™ spa light is in the pool as well. The pool itself incorporates a total of eleven Pentair™ LED lights and two GloBrite™ landscape lights.

Piedra Caliza del Cabo
Piedra Caliza del Cabo (“The Cape of White Stone”) overlooks the second green at Jack Nicklaus designed Traditions Golf Course (http://www.traditionsclub.com).
This complex is a towering series of pools that cascade, one into another, from the high perch above course. The owners can step from their home into the upper pool (one of four bodies of water) and watch the golfers play out the second hole with their feet hanging over the edge and listening to the soft babble of water from the four fountains. Or, if they so desire, they can stroll over the short bridge to enjoy the spa perched nearly seven feet over the main pool.
The spa sits astride the wall separating the upper pool from the main pool below. The upper basin continuously spills over into the main pool below. The spa includes a 360 degree vanishing edge spilling water over into both the upper pool and the main pool below. The main pool’s 36’ edge is also a vanishing edge and spills over into the final pool, a 44’ long catch basin cleverly designed as a lap-pool.
The effect is a soothing sound of water coming from several elevations and directions surrounding and echoing throughout the homes outdoor environment.
The main pool is constructed to provide for maximum enjoyment by the owners’ teenage daughters and their many friends. The rectangular pool measures 36’ x 18’ providing for a large water volleyball tournament, raging “chicken fights” or tests of aquatic speed. Should the owners of Piedra Caliza del Cabo begin to feel guilty they can, of course, swim a few laps in solitude in the large lap pool.

El Cabo de Cima Colina
El Cabo de Cima Colina is a project that offers an elegant respite from the bustle of Houston and the duties of the 600 acre ranch where this project is located. Located on the top of a prominent hill near Navasota, Texas this pool overlooks the pastures filled with wild flowers, live oak, cattle and the occasional bald eagle.
The pool is a classic rectangular design finished with imported Italian glass tiles, tumbled travertine coping and deck pavers. The pool incorporates a large infinity edge wier that allows the pool to continuously flows into the lower catch basin that doubles as a private soaking pool below the main pool and still takes in the same views.
Adjacent to the catch basin is a large (8’x8’) spa that is constructed at the main pool beam level and a mere 1” above the negative edge weir causing it to neither compete with the pool for attention nor block the views from the home, pool house or deck.
The pool equipment includes a state of the art Pentair® IntelliFlo VS+SVRS™ variable speed pump that both saves about 70-85% of the cost of operating a common single speed pump. The pool also incorporates Pentair® IntelliBrite™ LED lights in the pool (2), catch basin (2) and spa (1). The spa a proprietary “Cabo Ultra Spa” and utilizes two pool pumps, two air blowers and 14 Hayward® hydro-therapy spa jets and a Pentair® MaxTherm™ 400K btu propane heater combining to create a truly relaxing spa environment.
Cabo del Rancho
Cabo Del Rancho is a nearly perfect application of the so-called “negative edge” or “zero horizon” building technique. In theory a negative edge pool is constructed on a site that has either vertical terrain affording a long view or a view over water giving the illusion of no discernible boundary between water of the pool and that of the natural body of water beyond.
In the case of Cabo Del Rancho the owner and pool contractor met to place the pool the slab of the owners’ new home was complete and the pool was going to be situated between it and the 100 acre lake on the ranch. I took a spool of surveyors orange nylon cord and tacked it to a post on the porch at about eye level and staked the other end of it a few feet beyond the shore line on the lake. That represented the line of sight that one would have from the home. I explained that in order for the optical illusion of a negative edge to work the top edge of the negative edge pool wall could go no lower than that line regardless of where the pool was located on the ground. In other words, the closer to the house the pool was located the higher the negative edge wall would need to rise in order to shield the terrain behind the pool from view. The opposite was true as well.
The success of the illusion is plain to see. The rest of the pool design followed the owners’ wishes to achieve a natural oasis complete with streams, waterfalls and fog. The catch basin behind the pool holds the volume of water to supply the “Hill Country” to the right and the waterfall to the left. The waterfall includes an integrated slide and empties partially into the pool and partially into the spa.
The spa uses one of the water feature pumps as a booster pump and has two 2 h.p. air blowers as well. A FOGCO® mister system is utilized to introduce a cooling mist over the water in parts of the pool as well as along the path of the slide. The pool has a beach entry as well a so-called “pocket beach” near the spa enabling people of all ages to enjoy the water in many places and many ways.
A very unique feature of this pool is that a geothermal heat exchange grid is installed to keep the pool water at a refreshing temperature during the warmest Texas summer months.

Situated as it is at the dog-leg approach to the second green, golf fans will have an unobstructed and dramatic view of the action. The golfers will be enticed to shed their spikes and join the pool’s spectators as they watch the dramatic watch the dramatic waterfall cascading over the pool’s edge.
